Google My Business is the tool that lets businesses appear for free on Google Search and Maps; Google now calls this service "Google Business Profile", so the two are the same thing. Especially for local and physical-service businesses, it is one of the strongest and free ways to gain online visibility. Below you will find what the profile is, why it matters, how to set it up and verify it, how to manage and optimize it, and how to protect yourself from scams.
What Is Google My Business? (Now "Business Profile")
Google My Business is a tool that lets businesses appear for free on Google Search and Google Maps and manage their information. There is an important update: Google changed the name of this service to "Google Business Profile"; so "Google My Business" and "Google Business Profile" are the same thing, this is just the new name.
When someone searches for your business or service on Google, your name, address, phone, working hours, photos, website and customer reviews appear as a "business card". For businesses with a physical address or a service area, you create and manage your profile through business.google.com. In short, the business profile is the digital storefront that makes you findable on Google.
Why Is It Important? Local SEO and Visibility
Google Business Profile is a cornerstone of digital presence, especially for local businesses. When someone searches "[service] near me" or types your business name, you stand out on Google Search and Maps; that is the basis of local SEO, that is, ranking in the map pack.
Beyond visibility, it builds trust too: reviews, photos and up-to-date information make your business credible, and a customer gets directions or calls you with one tap. Among the local businesses I advise, even for those without an ad budget, the fastest gain often came from filling the profile out properly. You can deepen local SEO from sources like Moz's local SEO guide, and see why your business needs SEO in my separate article.
How Do You Set Up Google My Business? (Adding and Verifying a Business)
Adding your business takes a few steps and is free. You start with a Google account, enter your information and complete verification.
- Go to business.google.com or the "Create a Business Profile" link with a Google account.
- Enter your business name (it finds an existing record if there is one, or creates a new one).
- Choose an accurate, specific category that reflects what you do.
- Add a physical address or service area.
- Enter contact details (phone, website).
- Complete verification: Google usually asks for a postcard code, sometimes phone, email or video.
Once verification is complete, your profile goes live; postcard verification can take a few days. Since your profile does not fully appear until verified, do not skip this step.
Is Google My Business Paid?
No; Google Business Profile is completely free. You pay nothing to create a profile, verify it, add and update your information (address, hours, phone, photos), respond to reviews and appear on Search and Maps.
An important warning: be cautious of calls, emails or third parties saying "pay to feature or verify your business profile"; these are usually scams. The Google profile is free and does not ask for money to verify. The separate matter of Google Ads is paid, but the business profile itself and organic visibility are free.
How Do You Access and Manage the Business Profile?
The most practical way to manage your profile is to search for your own business name on Google or find it on Maps; if you are signed in with the right account, the "edit your profile" options (updating information, adding photos, replying to reviews, sharing posts) appear directly.
Alternatively, you can manage it through Google's business management page and the Maps/Search apps, including from mobile. The only condition is being signed in with the right Google account that created the profile; if you have more than one account, remember which one you used. For sign-in problems, check the account or manager that created the profile, and if needed use Google's official support pages.
Optimizing the Business Profile
Opening a profile alone is not enough; optimizing it noticeably increases visibility. A complete, active profile brings far more customers than a passive one.
- Fill in all information completely and accurately: name, the right category, address, phone, website, working hours.
- Add quality photos; profiles with photos get more interest.
- Write an accurate, detailed description and add your products and services.
- Share posts regularly (campaigns, news, events).
- Encourage customer reviews and reply professionally to all of them (positive or negative).
Reviews matter a great deal for local ranking and trust; a calm, solution-focused reply to a negative review is often more effective than a positive one, because it shows other customers what kind of business you are. Avoid asking for fake reviews; it is both banned and damaging to trust. Keeping your profile up to date through Google Maps helps Google show you higher.
Closing/Removing the Profile and Support
If the business has closed permanently, you can mark the profile as "permanently closed", and if you want to remove it entirely, you can use the removal option in the management settings; still, fully deleting a record formed on Google may not always be possible. You can transfer management access to someone else or remove yourself.
For support, use only Google's official Business Profile Help Center and support channels. Do not trust third parties who call as "live support" or ask for money; scams are common in this area. Business profile actions are free and should be carried out only through official channels.
